“Wars are still fought with missiles, aircraft, drones and soldiers. But increasingly, they are also fought over something less visible: what people believe has happened, why it happened and who has prevailed. That second contest, in simplified terms, is the information war.
The lesson deserves renewed and repeated attention after Operation Sindoor, which generated considerable discussion in India on information warfare, narrative control and strategic communication. The ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict demonstrates again that the information domain runs alongside kinetic operations, shaping perceptions of military success, legitimacy, resilience and escalation.
India’s public discourse understandably focuses on the physical dimensions of war. We count aircraft, missiles, targets destroyed and air-defence interceptions. These are tangible measures of military performance. But modern conflict cannot be understood through them alone. The battlefield produces events; the information domain influences how those events are understood.
This matters particularly in hybrid warfare, where the objective may be to weaken an adversary’s will, fracture public confidence, influence decision-making or create international pressure rather than simply defeat its armed forces……………………….”
