In chess, the object of the game is to kill the king — and after more than two decades spent wearing that crown, T.I. has decided to do it himself. The King of the South officially returned on Friday, June 26, with his highly anticipated twelfth and final studio album, Kill The King.
T.I. enters this pseudo-retirement as one of the defining architects of trap music and a three-time Grammy winner whose run of albums in the 2000s helped propel Atlanta rap to the center of hip-hop culture. It's his first project since 2020's The L.I.B.R.A., and according to the man himself, it's the last time we'll get a full-length release from the Grand Hustle boss.
T.I. has taken a deliberate approach to the Kill The King rollout. He first publicly discussed the album’s concept back in 2017 and has been building toward this moment ever since. Now, after years of anticipation, a dramatic haircut, and a string of potent singles, the time has come.
Kill The King caps off a legendary discography that includes classics like Trap Muzik, Urban Legend, and King. But Tip isn't just riding off into the sunset quietly; he's bringing an all-star cast of collaborators and embarking on "The King Succession Tour" this summer with his sons Domani and King Harris.

Tip has been teasing the concept of Kill The King for years. Back in 2017 on The Breakfast Club, he mapped out his final three albums, culminating with this exact title. "Ever since my first album, I've put the title of 'King of the South' on me and to make yourself the king is to make you a target," T.I. explained. "And in chess, the object is to kill the king. So Kill The King is the title of my last album. Will they kill him or will he ride into the sunset happily ever after?"
He later elaborated to TMZ in 2023, recalling advice he once received from OutKast's Big Boi. "Big Boi said, 'It sounds cool. I like it, but understand when you are king you put a big bullseye on your back,'" T.I. recalled. "Life is a game of chess, and the name of the game is called Kill the King. That's what you are setting yourself up for." The title is ultimately a reflection of that pressure, ego, and the long-overdue reckoning with what it truly means to hold the crown for so long.
During a candid appearance on The Breakfast Club this past Monday — just days before the album drops — T.I. gave his most thorough explanation yet of why Kill The King will be his last. Rather than pointing to platinum plaques or sold-out arenas as the measure of his career, Tip grounded his decision in gratitude and a new perspective.
"I done did this, man, I danced this dance quite some time," he told The Breakfast Club. "You know, just remembering where I was as a kid, man, and requesting songs on the radio, waiting to see my favorite video, buying The Source magazine, waiting to watch Video Music Box, just praying for an opportunity to be in the game. And man, going from that kid then to this man now, I got everything I prayed for."
But the decision to retire is also about making room. "I think about it, man — it's a kid somewhere right down in that same position, man, praying for their opportunity," he said. "And you know, it's time to let them get some. I can't ask for no more than the game already gave me."
He also pointed to the sheer volume of competition in today's music landscape as a factor. "The game has now become so saturated. It's a thousand, if not tens of thousands of us fighting for the same position," he said. "I've never been one that wanted to do what everybody was doing. Back when I said I wanted to be a rapper, it was actually something different to do. And now, I can imagine if a kid says he want to be a rapper — 'Ah, another one.' So I'm gonna go try and do something else."
Crucially, Tip was careful to clarify that retirement from albums does not mean silence. "I'm not saying I ain't gonna make no music no more," he said. "There could be songs for soundtracks, there could be collaboration albums, or who knows. I just want to focus my time on doing more film, television, real estate developments, and just other stuff."
Of course, there is some chance that this won’t actually end up being Tip’s final album—Complex pointed out that the album’s final song “Continental” ends with a woman’s voice saying “to be continued,” which suggests there could be another chapter from his musical story in the works.
T.I. isn't closing out his recording career alone. Kill The King features a mix of longtime collaborators, Atlanta peers, family members, and a few unexpected guests.
The album has attracted attention for high-profile collaborations with producers like Dr. Dre, Pharrell Williams, Organized Noize, DJ Toomp, Turbo, and Juicy J. Here is the full track-by-track producer breakdown, according to Spotify:

T.I. kicked off the official rollout in January 2026 with "Let 'Em Know," a bouncy, braggadocius lead single produced by Pharrell Williams. In the music video, T.I. shaves off his dreads, which he started growing during the pandemic. Between the Pharrell reunion and the fresh cut, the single’s rollout was perceived by fans as a symbolic return to the old T.I.
The partnership between Tip and Pharrell stretches all the way back to T.I.'s debut album, I'm Serious, in 2001, where The Neptunes contributed production and Pharrell appeared as a featured artist on the title track. Since then, Pharrell and Tip have collaborated on more than a dozen tracks.
“Let ’Em Know” was a massive success, becoming Tip’s first top 40 hit since 2014. It was also the first RIAA certified gold record of 2026 across all genres and topped the rhythmic airplay charts. Tip also opened the 2026 BET Awards with a performance of the song. It proved that even on his way out, Tip still has undeniable hit-making chemistry with Skateboard P.
Following the success of "Let 'Em Know," T.I. kept the momentum going. In March, he dropped "Trauma Bond," a deeply reflective track featuring the Tuskegee University band Marching Crimson Pipers, complete with an official music video that showed a more introspective side of the Atlanta veteran. He then turned up the heat in May with "Mr. Him," another Pharrell-produced banger that arrived just in time for the summer. The singles showcase the duality of T.I. — the introspective artist and the undeniable hitmaker — setting the stage perfectly for the full album.
Tip isn't just dropping the album and disappearing. To celebrate Kill The King, he is launching "The King Succession Tour" starting July 8 in Phoenix. Billed by Live Nation as "a rare multi-generational moment on stage," T.I. will be bringing his sons Domani and King Harris along as opening acts. The tour will hit major cities including Dallas, Houston, Brooklyn, Chicago, and Los Angeles, wrapping up in San Francisco on August 15, giving fans one last chance to see the King of the South perform his legendary catalog.
