Climate change and the associated heat stress also place high demands on potato breeders. “Recent years have clearly shown that, when selecting varieties, we must increasingly consider their adaptability to varying weather conditions. In our view, there is no single ‘climate-resistant’ potato variety; what matters most is how a variety copes with different stress situations. For example, during prolonged heat and drought, we look for varieties that maintain stable tuber set and good yield levels even under stress, while also exhibiting tuber development that is as uniform as possible,” explains Arne Pagel (pictured below), product manager at Solana Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG.

Pagel emphasizes that quality is also particularly important in this context. “Heat stress can lead to problems such as sprouting, growth cracks, or uneven sorting. In many regions, early maturity can also play a role here to take advantage of any moisture that may be present in the soil. When we look at current consumer trends, we see that many German households now own an air fryer, and accordingly, there is demand for potatoes and products or varieties suited for this.”

Expansion of the French fry and potato chip portfolio
At this year’s Potato Europe, the Solana Group will, among other things, put the spotlight on the Edison French fry variety. The variety is already well-received worldwide due to its low nitrogen requirements, rapid tuber growth, and good resilience to heat. Pagel: “In addition, we have revamped our potato chip portfolio and added two high-performing varieties. First, there’s Beethoven, which covers the early segment and stands out above all for its extremely high yield combined with very good starch content. We’re also launching Carlos, a new variety specialized for cold and long-term storage. Its suitability for processing right through to the very end of the storage season, coupled with excellent sugar content, is its major advantage. All three varieties mentioned are also very attractive for seed potato farms, as they all demonstrate strong resistance to the Y virus.”

Jan Soltau (pictured above), Managing Director at Solana Germany, is also looking forward to the trade show and the in-depth discussions with industry professionals on site. “In particular, we want to demonstrate the potential our varieties offer under today’s challenging growing conditions. This applies both to their high efficiency, for example in nitrogen use, and to their diverse marketing opportunities.
