HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — The Trump administration is investigating the campaign finances of Senator Ruben Gallego, the Arizona Democrat recently cleared of misconduct by the chamber’s ethics panel.
Allegations about Gallego’s expenses, which reportedly include thousands on personal pursuits, were dismissed by the bipartisan group of his colleagues on Friday. Representative Anna Paulina Luna, the Florida Republican, vaguely accused him of violations in April.
The Department of Justice’s investigation stems from a complaint made by a southern Californian whistleblower, according to Axios, which first reported on it. The National News Desk (TNND) requested comment from the DOJ but hasn’t received a response as of the time of publication.
The Daily Beast reported earlier this month that Gallego tapped one of his political action committees to fly to Miami and the Caribbean island of St. Barts, as well as for babysitting. He pulled thousands of dollars for those pursuits, according to the outlet, which reviewed campaign finance records.
He hasn’t returned TNND’s comment requests but dismissed the DOJ’s investigation in a statement to Axios.
“Trump is targeting Senator Gallego while the most weaponized Department of Justice in history is turning a blind eye to Trump’s unprecedented corruption,” one of his spokespersons said. “It’s the least surprising news of the week that this comes immediately after the Senate Ethics Committee cleared Senator Gallego of right-wing smears pushed by the administration.”
Luna told CBS News in her April interview, which mostly focused on other accusations of sexual misconduct, that the campaign finance allegations were “cut and dry.” She denied in a Monday reaction to the Ethics Committee's announcement that her claims were “conspiracy theories.”
“The good news about DC is everyone talks, and eventually the reporters come forward with your texts,” Luna said. “Do yourself a favor and keep raising for your legal defense fund. Once a creep always a creep, and you’re gonna need it.”
Gallego distanced himself from misconduct speculation, particularly that which was sexual, after his close friend Eric Swalwell became entangled in a scandal earlier this year. The California Democrat, who served in the House for more than a dozen years before his resignation, has been accused by multiple women of sex crimes, which he denies.
“My friendship with him, our families’ friendship together with him, clouded my judgment,” Gallego told reporters in April, referencing Swalwell’s other close colleagues. “And I was wrong. I deeply, deeply regret that.”
Luna referred Gallego to the Ethics Committee days after his comments.
