Power is a means to serve the people, raise their voice in legislatures
Srinagar, 22 Aug: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Provincial President Showkat Ahmad Mir Saturday said that addressing public grievances and ensuring timely resolution of people’s issues remains the foremost priority of Omar government and the elected representatives.
Mir made these remarks while interacting with party leaders, office-bearers, workers and public delegations from Central, North and South Kashmir. The delegations apprised him of various issues confronting people in their respective areas, following which he took up several matters with senior officials of the concerned departments on the spot and urged them to ensure their early and effective redressal.
In a satatement issued here, He said the government headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is working round the clock to translate the people’s aspirations into tangible action, with the entire administrative machinery being geared towards public welfare and the delivery of essential services. He maintained that the government remains committed to fulfilling the promises made by the National Conference to the people before the elections.
“The purpose of power is not to occupy positions; it is to serve the people. Power is a means to raise the voice of the people in the legislatures, address their grievances and protect their rights and dignity,” Showkat Mir said.
He urged party workers to remain closely connected with the people and make public service the cornerstone of their political and organisational responsibilities. He said that taking the party’s programmes and agenda to the grassroots must remain a priority for every worker, adding that one of the most significant achievements of the present government has been the restoration of direct contact between the government and the people.
“The National Conference does not view governance merely as an exercise of authority. Our politics has always been rooted in service, justice and the empowerment of the people. We must use every position and every opportunity to bring people’s concerns before the authorities and ensure that genuine grievances do not remain unattended,” he said.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Recalling the historic political legacy of the National Conference, Showkat Mir said the movement under Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was born out of a struggle against injustice, oppression, intimidation and arbitrary rule. He said that the movement represented the aspirations of the people and ultimately helped end the era of autocratic rule in Jammu and Kashmir.
He said the hardships and challenges endured by the people over the past decade, particularly since 2019, remain deeply etched in public memory. “The manner in which the people were subjected to uncertainty, their rights curtailed and their voices suppressed is something that cannot simply be forgotten. The people have endured enough, and our responsibility is to ensure that their democratic voice is heard, respected and represented,” he said.
Expressing satisfaction over the emergence of a genuinely people-oriented government, Showkat Mir said that people across Jammu and Kashmir have experienced a renewed sense of hope and relief. He stressed that restoration of full statehood is vital for the democratic and developmental interests of Jammu and Kashmir, enabling the elected government to function with greater authority and accountability in addressing the aspirations of its people.
Reiterating the National Conference’s commitment to the political and constitutional rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, he said the party would continue to pursue its longstanding agenda with determination.
“The rights and dignity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir are central to our political existence. The National Conference has never shied away from its responsibilities, and we will continue to stand firmly for the rights of our people, their dignity and their democratic aspirations,” Showkat Mir said.(KNS)
