Facebook and Instagram owner Meta says changes to its rules on hate speech last year that allowed statements such as “immigrants are scum”, “trans people don’t exist”, and “gay people are sinners” to remain online were about giving users more freedom to debate topics.
Benjamin Good, the global director of the core policy team at Meta Platforms, told the antisemitism royal commission on Monday that the company had shifted its policy on the removal of hateful content after an announcement by chief executive Mark Zuckerberg in January 2025.
