August is already looking to be a good month for Netflix subscribers, with several movies and TV shows added and more to come to the streaming platform. Not only on Netflix, but on other platforms, there’s also plenty to be excited for as a frequent streamer. New shows like Lanterns (HBO) have already been generating buzz, while others, like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (FX), are returning us to characters we know and love.
What would make August even better? How about a new Season 4 trailer for The Diplomat? Created by Debora Cahn, the political drama show centers on Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), who becomes the new US ambassador to the UK. However, she soon learns that the position comes with plenty of highs and lows. The Diplomat has been a favorite on the site since its premiere in 2023. In 2024, it was quickly renewed for Season 2, then Season 3 in 2025. Netflix dropped the trailer for the upcoming season, and we’re right back into a world of political intrigue and personal drama.
Season 3 ended quite dramatically as Kate and Hal’s (Rufus Sewell) relationship almost reached its breaking point when she realized that her husband was using her position for his own political gain by attempting to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon. Not to mention Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford) muddying the waters by pointing out the close dynamic between Hal and his wife Grace (Allison Janney), who aided this plot. In the teaser for Season 4, Kate is determined to regain control, saying that she’s not looking to “get out” of her marriage but rather “get back in.” Amidst scenes of various press conferences, their strained marriage is at the center as Kate promises that “the fights are gonna be spicy.” For what it is worth, she seems determined to get their relationship back on track, even with the looming threat of war following Hal and Grace’s plot.
The official logline for Season 4 reads: “In Season 4 of The Diplomat, two marriages threaten to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war. Kate and Todd (Whitford), at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home.”
Given The Diplomat’s critical acclaim and high viewing figures (pulling in 1.24 billion viewers between Oct. 20–26, according to The Hollywood Reporter), a new season was inevitable. As for what we know about Season 4, it will run for eight episodes and feature many returning cast members, including Russell, Sewell, Whitford, and Janney. However, any news on new cast members has been rather quiet, so we’ll have to wait until Oct.15 to see the players being added to the board.
