Social platform X (formerly Twitter) owned by Elon Musk is in talks about using stablecoins — including Circle’s USDC — to pay royalties to content creators and influencers. CoinDesk reported this, citing a source familiar with the plans.
The talks are ongoing, the source said, adding that they also work with other social networks that are testing stablecoins as a way to pay creator commissions.
The move is being considered amid changes to the platform’s monetization model: X is winding down its old Revenue Sharing program and launching Original Content Rewards — a new system focused on supporting unique ideas and original analysis.
X’s move is not the first time Musk’s ecosystem has used stablecoins: SpaceX already uses them to pay for Starlink services in regions where bank transfers are too slow or unreliable, noted one participant in the discussion.
Part of the crypto community sees this step as potentially significant for mainstream crypto adoption — but not in the traditional sense.
“The most important moments for crypto adoption don’t come when everyone suddenly starts buying it. They come when people start using it without even thinking about it,” commentators in the community believe.
Others are more cautious: stablecoins давно stopped being just collateral for trading and are turning into a global infrastructure for paying salaries. Once a creator in Lagos or Buenos Aires can receive USDC and easily cash it out into local currency — SWIFT will become merely optional for them, the above-mentioned X user emphasized.
As a reminder, earlier the U.S. Treasury published a draft set of rules for regulating stablecoins under the GENIUS Act.
