Police in Kisoro District, operating in conjunction with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, have arrested two local politicians over alleged corruption and abuse of office.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, Mr Nelson Tumushime, confirmed on Thursday that the suspects include the Kisoro District Council Speaker, Mr Amos Hakizimana, 45. Mr Hakizimana, a resident of Kamonyi Cell in Kisoro Municipality, also serves as the LCV Councillor representing Mulora Sub-county.
Police identified the second suspect as Mr John Mfitumukiza, 35, the LCV Councillor for Nyarusiza Sub-county and a resident of Zindiro Cell in Kisoro Municipality.
According to the authorities, the arrests follow allegations that the two officials used their positions to extort money from job seekers.
“The duo allegedly abused their office by soliciting bribes from different job seekers in Kisoro District in the year 2025. They are currently detained at Kisoro Central Police Station pending further investigations,” Mr Tumushime said on Thursday.

The developments come hot on the heels of the August 12 arrests of the Kisoro District Service Commission Chairperson, Mr Erastus Nshaka, 64, alongside local businessman Mr Aliphose Muhanika, 61, over similar allegations of extortion and abuse of office.
Addressing the earlier arrests, Mr Tumushime stated: “The duo were arrested for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Five Million Uganda Shillings (Shs5,000,000) from a person who was looking for a job at the District Service Commission in Kisoro District.”
He added that the two suspects were detained at Kisoro Central Police Station following formal complaints of abuse of office and extortion.
“The file was submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) office for consent,” Mr Tumushime said, noting that if the DPP concurs with the police findings, the suspects will be arraigned in court to face the charges preferred against them.
