FBI Director Kash Patel defended the FBI's investigation into former FBI Director James Comey against Democrats' "baseless objections" that President Donald Trump weaponized the bureau to go after Comey.
"Career FBI agents, intel analysts, and staff led the investigation into Comey and others," Patel wrote on X. "They called the balls and strikes and will continue to do so. The wildly false accusations attacking this FBI for the politicization of law enforcement comes from the same bankrupt media that sold the world on Russia Gate- it’s hypocrisy on steroids."
"Their baseless objections tell us now, more than ever, that we are precisely over the target and will remain on mission until completion," Patel continued.
On Thursday, Comey was charged on counts of giving false statements in the jurisdiction of a congressional proceeding and obstruction of a congressional proceeding. The charges stem from allegations that Comey lied during his testimony to Congress in September 2020, in which Congress was holding an investigation into Russian collusion in the 2016 election.
The charges brought against Comey came as the statute of limitations for the alleged crime was set to expire. Lindsey Halligan, a Trump loyalist, presented the case before the grand jury seeking three counts of criminal charges; however, the grand jury dropped one of the charges, a rare move given how a grand jury will typically rubber-stamp all charges.
Halligan, who had no prior experience as a prosecutor, was appointed to serve as the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia earlier this week after Trump ousted Erik Siebert, who found there was not sufficient evidence to prosecute Comey.
Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday to express his frustrations with Attorney General Pam Bondi over the lack of movement in criminal cases against his enemies, including Comey, former Attorney General Letitia James, and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA).
"We can’t delay any longer, it’s killing our reputation and credibility. They impeached me twice, and indicted me (5 times!), OVER NOTHING. JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!" Trump said on Truth Social.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MA) spoke out on Thursday in response to the indictment of Comey.
"Donald Trump finally got a subservient new replacement to carry out his revenge prosecution against former FBI Director James Comey by bringing baseless criminal charges against him,” Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, said. “He forced Mr. Seibert to resign in order to replace him with one of his former defense attorneys, Lindsey Halligan, who has literally no prosecutorial experience but is clearly willing to blindly carry out the president’s orders. As if by magic, within mere days of being appointed, Ms. Halligan delivered for the president by filing the exact baseless charges against Mr. Comey that her predecessor had rejected.”
