A federal investigation is continuing into Wednesday’s deadly collision involving a small plane and a state police helicopter at a regional airport in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
NTSB investigator in charge Aaron McCarter told a news briefing this morning that data cards have been recovered from both aircraft. He added that the Cessna and Bell helicopter are being sent to a facility in Delaware, where their manufacturers will help investigators do a detailed evaluation. He adds that after reviewing video and talking to witnesses, investigators have determined that the helicopter was off the runway and hovering over a grassy area when the Cessna, which appeared to be out of control, hit it.
The pilot of the plane, identified as 57-year-old Dr. Paul Sokoloski, was killed. The troopers aboard the helicopter were injured but are recovering.
