Democratic Socialists set sights on 2028 after primary wins – Muslim Network TV

WASHINGTON (MNTV) — The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are preparing for the 2028 presidential race after a run of electoral wins strengthened their influence within the Democratic Party.
The group plans to survey members across its 250 chapters to decide which potential candidates to support, with chapters submitting assessments by Sept. 15 and a formal decision likely at its 2027 convention.
The effort follows victories by DSA-backed candidates aligned with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who recently won three closely watched congressional primaries, unseating two incumbents.
Mamdani himself cannot run for president, as the Constitution requires the officeholder to be born in the U.S.
The most prominent potential candidate is Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, though DSA leaders say she would have to compete for the group’s endorsement like anyone else; the organization has about 110,000 members and does not automatically back even its best-known figures.
Their relationship has been uneven — the DSA backed her 2018 campaign but clashed with her over positions on Israel during the 2024 cycle. Beyond New York, DSA-backed candidates have won in Philadelphia, Washington, and Seattle, and the group is supporting campaigns in Colorado, Florida, and former Representative Cori Bush’s bid to return to Congress in Missouri.
The movement’s rise has revived debate over the party’s direction: supporters say a stronger economic agenda can broaden its appeal, while moderates warn socialist candidates could struggle in competitive districts.
The DSA has also had setbacks — the pandemic weakened organizing, and progressives including Bush and Jamaal Bowman lost 2024 primaries.
The 2028 cycle will test whether the movement can convert urban strength into a national coalition.
We must take charge of our narrative. Research indicates that 92% of their Muslim coverage is negative. Help us change that.
